The Future of Valdez Skate Park is Now

The Gender & Generational Healing Justice Program at Tewa Women United cultivates inclusive community spaces in which people of all identities can experience safe social engagement. We foster conversations and learning opportunities to explore consent culture and A’gin (respect for self and others).

TWU has a long history of events at Valdez Skate Park in Española that engage intergenerational, diverse crowds. These events braid skate culture, art, free food, and at times incorporate the Healing Foods Oasis. Our vision is that Valdez Skate Park becomes a safer space for Indigenous people of all gender identities, and more accessible for beginning skaters and those with physical disabilities.

What’s next?

We are working with elected officials of the City of Española to develop design plans and a fundraising goal for the rebuild of the skate park as part of a larger plan to breathe new life into Valdez Park. Essential to this project are the voices of youth who have been skating the park for years.

Our planning meetings center the voices of youth, and their expressed needs. Fostering their skills for self-advocacy is our goal. Now we further that goal with the incorporation of A’Gin Youth Council, youth apprentices, and partnering with other youth-serving organizations to deepen the engagement of young artists and skaters.

What will change?

Informed by suggestions from young people, and with the support of community members, TWU will host three skate events in 2024. These events, taking place in June, August, and October, will each represent themes that promote the safety and celebration of women, girls, and gender-expansive community members. Each event furthers the transformation of the space, both physically and relationally.

In addition to the movement art presented by those on wheels, each event will also integrate visual and performance art. This is the power of Valdez Skate Park: it is a community hub where people of all ages and abilities belong. An estimated completion date for the rebuild will be announced at one of our 2024 events.

August 3: Make Space, Take Space Day!

On Saturday, August 3, 1 – 4 pm, we’re organizing a friendly “takeover” of Valdez Park. We’re representing the theme “make space, take space” in multiple ways and invite you to join us!

From the skate park to the Española Healing Foods Oasis, we’ll have activities for all ages, musical performances, and free school supplies from our partnering organizations. There will also be food catered by Manko: Native American Fusion (with a limited number of free meals for youth and elders), “Calm & Comfort” stations provided by Casa First, and the opportunity to hear about a number of youth programs in our Valley.

This event is open to people of all ages from our beloved community, with a special invitation to those who have felt uncomfortable “taking space” in Valdez Park. We’re here to support you! For more information or to become a partner organization, contact jamie@tewawomenunited.org
