Healthy Masculinities Toolkit: Updated Edition!

The New Mexico Healthy Masculinities Community of Practice has released the 2nd Edition of the New Mexico Healthy Masculinities Toolkit!

This body of work emerges from a collaborative effort of 17 organizations, including Tewa Women United. TWU staff, including Elder Kathy Sanchez and Corrine Sanchez, were involved in the visioning and creation of the first Toolkit which came out in 2022. Jamie Allbach, our Gender and Generational Healing Justice Program Manager, contributed to this round. The new edition includes feedback from people who graciously participated in an evaluation of the first iteration.

The Healthy Masculinities Toolkit is a 70-page e-book that’s intended to help community members explore gender, reimagine masculinities, and deepen consent within relationships. The Toolkit, beautifully illustrated by Israel Haros Lopez, includes readings, a facilitation guide, and a wide variety of exercises that can be used by groups and individuals.

At the end of July, Tewa Women United hosted a Healthy Masculinities Toolkit Training Day on our campus. We were joined by 13 community educators and advocates to explore use of the Toolkit in different settings. It was wonderful to have representatives from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), YUCCA, Trujillo Family Farm/Orchard/Catering, Ixchel First Aid, and Nambe Healthy Families, as well as three youth facilitators and a nurse from the Pojoaque Valley School District.

The intention of this and future trainings is to create long-term impact by empowering educators and youth to challenge gender-based harm and cultivate a culture of consent. The skills gained will ripple through classrooms and peer networks, contributing to safer, more inclusive environments for all.
