Reproductive Justice Program: Presenté for our Community!
Over the past year, our dedicated Reproductive Justice team – Wendolyne Omaña, Laura Cipres, and Vicki Vessier – have held several listening sessions to better understand what community members need to support their wellbeing and reproductive health.
As a result of this process, we are creating events, classes, workshops, and projects that truly meet these needs. We’ve added bilingual and Spanish offerings, and we now have three monthly support groups – a Grief and Loss group, a Perinatal circle, and a bilingual circle with Somos un Pueblo Unido – to support families and community members in an inclusive and caring way.
And of course there is our Yiya Vi Kagingdi Community Doula Project! Our doulas have been supporting moms and families with emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
Our Reproductive Justice Program opens its doors to all residents of Rio Arriba County, especially Indigenous families. In addition to events, workshops, and doulas, we offer a wide range of wellness and reproductive justice care items for our community, from menstruation to postpartum and beyond:
- Depend (maxi pads for elders) are now available in addition to our free pads and Flow organic products.
- Reproductive health items: Opill (over-the-counter contraceptive pill), condoms, disposable underwear, menstrual underwear, reusable pads and menstrual cups, pregnancy tests, and 1:1 support to learn about the menstrual cycle as well as fertility continuance resources.
- Lactation support items through the YVK Doula services: lactation pumps, nursing sports bras, and nipple shields; along with prenatal, labor/delivery, and postpartum bags.
- Safety and emergency care: LifeVac and First Aid kits thoughtfully organized by CPR Santa Fe.
- Compostable/organic diapers to the families we serve
- A lactation room (equipped with a multi-user professional body pump and refrigerator) that provides a private space during work breaks, or for those working from home while lactating
- A community closet for babies aged 0 – 12 months
We’re here to support bodily sovereignty, safety, and dignity for everyone in our community. If you are pregnant and have questions about baby development and resources, we are here for you, too. Please contact our staff for more information and let us know if you’d like to drop by or pick up diapers, baby clothes, or other resources, or simply stop by to visit and chat with us!
