In January, our dear friend Nathana Bird completed her role as co-director of Tewa Women United and stepped into an exciting new position as Tribal Liaison and Director of Indian Education with New Mexico Higher Education Department’s Indian Education Division.
Nathana says,
“This opportunity feels especially meaningful for me as a community-based educator and organizer. Those experiences of listening deeply, building relationships, and moving at the speed of trust, will guide how I show up in this work. I’m looking forward to connecting with Native communities, Native students, families, and institutions across the state, and to serving as a connector to resources, services, and information that support Indigenous self-determination and educational sovereignty. I am grateful for the communities, colleagues, and mentors who made this possible and beyond excited for the work ahead.”
We are thrilled for this step in Nathana’s career path and look forward to watching her bring her dedication to youth, education, and community into her new role. We have seen firsthand what a difference she has made in our communities.
Nathana has a long her-story with Tewa Women United. She first became involved with the organization in 2007 as a board member. Even before this official engagement, she crossed paths with TWU earlier as a youth organizer in Northern New Mexico and regionally through various youth organizations, focused primarily on environmental justice issues and education.
Over the years, we have so much appreciated Nathana’s heart, wisdom, and steadiness as she supports all of us to grow Beloved Community. We wish her all the best in this new beginning, and know that our relational-tivity continues.
