Online Event
SovereignTea Community Conversations on Environmental Justice are quarterly discussions on various environmental and social justice topics. Topics range from the nuclear industry, to climate resiliency, to concerns related to changes in local/national leadership. The purpose of these Conversations is to provide accessible information to community members.
This SovereignTea will give the community an opportunity to learn about what is currently happening in some EJ spaces across the state. We will hear from one representative on each campaign or issue:
- Water Quality Control Commission Ruling – WQCC recently voted to vacate a controversial vote from last summer that would have allowed the oil & gas industry that would have allowed for the discharge of produced to the state’s surface and ground water, in some instances without monitoring.
- NMLAWS Lawsuit Update – NM LAWS (New Mexico Land, Air, Water and the Sacred) is a coalition of Indigenous, frontline, youth and environmental organizations and community members demanding that the State of NM live up to its constitutional duty to control pollution, protect the fundamental rights of New Mexicans, and guarantee equal protection under the law. This November, the Supreme Court of New Mexico agreed to hear their case.
- Chromium Plume – LANL recently announced that the chromium plume has migrated onto San Ildefonso land. Drinking water has the potential to be affected since DOE’s clean up and remediation actions have not worked.
- Down With Emissions – A recently formed campaign by Healthy Climate New Mexico focused on building awareness about the human health harms created by extractive industries. Currently exploring air pollution created by oil & gas as the source of negative health impacts. Opportunity to introduce a community-based air quality monitoring project.
