Reproductive Justice Program Receives “Walk the Talk” Award

On February 5, 2026, TWU’s Reproductive Justice (RJ) Program received the “Walk the Talk” award from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (PPRM). The award was given at the annual Toast of the Town event held in Santa Fe, attended by more than 300 supporters and keynoted by Secretary Deb Haaland.

We are truly grateful for this honor, and for these words acknowledging our work from Melissa Pacheco-Armijo of the PPRM:

“PPRM is committed to supporting our Indigenous community and has been deeply moved by the inspiration and impact that Tewa Women United has been and has made in northern New Mexico….

I have been extremely inspired, and I was deeply moved when Tewa Women United hosted the Reproductive Health Mercado in September and I saw all of the compassion and resources that Tewa Women United offers. Not only are you helping our Indigenous community you are also helping so many in the community who are in dire need. PPRM is extremely thankful that the Tewa Women United exists and would like to recognize Tewa Women United’s invaluable work.”

The work of our RJ Program spans advocacy to direct action to training the next generation of doulas and birthworkers.

Since 2008, our Yiya Vi Kagingdi Community Doula Project has provided services for the whole family, across generations, to encourage everyone to gather around the new parents. We offer moms and families emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. In 2025, our doulas and student doulas have had the honor of welcoming 19 new babies into the world.

Our YVK Full Spectrum Community Doula Training is built upon a reproductive justice framework, weaving resiliency practices with the reclamation of birth knowledge in our local communities. In 2025, 10 students graduated from the YVK Training, marking the continuation of a sacred legacy of care, advocacy, and cultural reclamation.

Our Family Support Services offers bilingual support groups, classes, and workshops for parents and caregivers. We also offer a wide range of wellness and reproductive justice care items for all residents of Rio Arriba County, especially Indigenous families, from menstruation to postpartum and beyond, including reproductive health items like Opill (over-the-counter contraceptive pill), condoms, disposable underwear, menstrual underwear, reusable pads and menstrual cups, and pregnancy tests.

In everything we do we aspire to “walk the talk,” and we so much appreciate this recognition from PPRM.
